Keg Sourcing & Storage

Where to buy, how to store, freshness, and the keg-size question.

Where to buy a keg, what size to get, and how long it'll last after you tap it — these are the three keg-sourcing questions every home kegerator owner asks within their first month. The answers vary by US state (and country if you're outside the US), keg size, and the beer style.

In the US, most home kegs move through state-licensed beer distributors and large liquor stores. In the UK, Beerwulf and KegBeer.co.uk dominate online; most pubs will sell off-prem too. In Australia, KegSwappa and Kegs on Legs are the big names. In Europe, the Heineken Sub system dominates the small-keg market.

For the freshness math after you tap: try the keg freshness countdown calculator. Plug in beer style, keg size, tap date, and storage temperature; out comes days-remaining at peak quality, drink-by date, and the daily pour pace needed to finish before it goes flat.

Below: every keg sourcing article, the cost-per-pint math for different keg sizes, and the freshness rules that prevent you from drinking a stale 50L on day 28.

Frequently asked: keg sourcing & storage

Where can I buy a keg of beer near me?

US: state-licensed beer distributors (cheapest), large liquor stores like Total Wine or BevMo (most convenient), local breweries direct (freshest). UK: Beerwulf, BeerHawk, KegBeer.co.uk for online; most pubs will sell off-prem. AU: KegSwappa, Kegs on Legs, Dan Murphy's for online; major liquor chains for in-store. Order 48-72 hours ahead for popular kegs around game days and holidays.

How long does a keg last after tapping?

A standard CO2-pressurised home kegerator keeps a tapped keg fresh for 6-8 weeks. Nitrogen-served stouts last 4-6 weeks. Hand-pumped (party-pump) kegs go flat within 24-48 hours because they're pressurised with air instead of CO2. The freshness clock starts the moment you tap; an untapped keg in proper conditions lasts months.

What size keg should I buy?

US half-barrel (15.5 gal, 165 12oz beers): standard party size, good for 12-20 guests. US sixth-barrel (5.16 gal, 55 beers): home kegerator default, lasts a single household 4-6 weeks. UK/EU 50L (88 pints): equivalent to half-barrel, standard for UK home setups. UK/EU 30L (53 pints): smaller party / pub size. 5L mini-keg (PerfectDraft, Heineken Sub): single-evening size, novelty/gift-grade.

How much does a keg cost?

US half-barrel of domestic (Bud Light, Coors, Miller): $120-$160 plus $30-$75 deposit. US craft half-barrel: $150-$220 plus deposit. UK 50L of mainstream lager (Carling, Carlsberg): £130-£155. UK 50L of Heineken/Stella: £155-£175. AU 50L: $280-$320 AUD. Imports always cost more than domestics. See the regional landings on drinkcountr.com for full pricing tables.

Do I get my keg deposit back?

Yes, if you return the empty keg and any rented tap/pump to the same vendor with your original receipt. Returns typically need to happen within 30-90 days of purchase. The keg should be in reasonable condition (dented is fine, destroyed is not). Some vendors refund in cash; others credit it back to the card.
